Antique Map Pre-Unification Germany John Rapkin Circa 1860

Antique steel-engraved map of pre-unification Germany, drawn and engraved by prominent British cartographer John Rapkin circa 1860. The map showcases the complex regional borders of Holstein, Mecklenburg, Bavaria, and surrounding territories with meticulous topographic detail. Framed by a highly ornate Victorian rococo-style decorative border, the map features an elaborate heraldic crest at the upper centre. The centrepiece displays the Reichsadler (Imperial Eagle) with imperial regalia—crowned and grasping sword and sceptre—crowned above a Maltese cross emblem of the Prussian Order of the Black Eagle, accented in original period hand-colouring. A Victorian leaf garland envelops the crest, with a decorative ribbon banner inscribed "GERMANY" beneath. The engraving exhibits visible vertical and horizontal fold lines characteristic of atlas binding. Minor age-related toning is present, along with slight edge wear and a small separation on the far left margin. The map retains its original hand-applied watercolour tinting, applied by mid-19th-century workshop colorists using fine brushwork—visible in the subtle yellow rosettes and boundary detailing.
