Antique South Germany Bavaria & Württemberg Railways 1876 old Map

This is an original engraved map titled "South Germany, (Bavaria, &c.)" drawn and engraved by prominent English cartographer J. Archer (Joshua Archer) of Pentonville, London. Published in 1872 by William Mackenzie, it depicts the German Empire's southern territories in the pivotal years following German unification in 1871.
The map illustrates the Kingdom of Bavaria, the Kingdom of Württemberg, the Grand Duchy of Baden, and the newly incorporated Alsace-Lorraine region along the western frontier. Hand-colored using lithographic techniques characteristic of late-Victorian commercial atlases, the map employs color-coded geopolitical boundaries to distinguish territories, with detailed representations of railway networks, river systems, and topographical features.
A critical notation in the legend states: "The territories colored green form part of the North German Confederation"—a detail that captures the fleeting geopolitical balance of Central Europe at the precise moment before the Franco-Prussian War (1870–1871) and the formal consolidation of the unified German state.
